# Erwin data — terms of use

This package is a **compilation** of military and defense economics statistics
drawn from the public sources named, series by series, in `PROVENANCE.csv` and
`data_dictionary.csv`.

**The upstream sources keep their own terms.** Each series names the body that
published it — the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), NATO,
the US Bureau of Economic Analysis, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Federal
Reserve Bank of St. Louis (FRED), USAspending.gov, the US Department of Defense
comptroller, the World Bank (WDI), and Historical Statistics of the United States.
Consult that body for the terms that apply to that series. No term is asserted here
on any upstream publisher's behalf. SIPRI in particular requires attribution and
restricts commercial redistribution of its expenditure database — check SIPRI's own
terms before republishing those series.

**The compilation** — the series identifiers, the per-series files, the data
dictionary and the provenance record — is offered under **CC-BY-4.0**, as declared
in `CITATION.cff`. That grant covers this compilation only; it cannot and does not
re-license anyone else's underlying data.

It is a reconstruction: it can lag official revisions and can contain
reconstruction error, and it is not a substitute for the original source. For
authoritative figures, defer to the source named for that series.

**No warranty.** Provided as is.

Cite per `CITATION.cff`.
